<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">The purpose of this study is to clarify the historic significance of the Kaiserswerth Deaconess Institute ("the Institute") in Germany and it's contributions to children's health. This study is based on the integration of both quantitative data by KH Coder analysis of documents and qualitative data obtained from field work. Analysis of the Institute's contributions to preschool education leads to the following conclusions. The Institute trained nurses and childcare providers and organized them. The Institute advocated moving children outdoors, typically to a preschool-garden, for four hours every day, where children could experience nature and play outdoors to promote their mental and physical development, and enrich their minds and bodies with carefully planned preschool schedules. The Institute promoted outdoor play in an environment necessary for the growth of each child, and this also promoted the health of each child. The Institute also promoted "child cleanliness," "child nursing facilities" and "child food education." Prior to the widespread adoption of the ideas and policies of the Institute, the children in Germany were very dirty and typically suffered from numerous skin infections, including tick parasites. In Germany, even as late as 1846-1847, scabies infections accounted for 48% of children's diseases. In summary, before the founding of the Institute, a major cause of illness for the working class and their children was their low personal hygiene. In addition, the Institute promoted clean and nutritious meals for children. Therefore, the Institute's founders, the Lutheran minister Theodor Fliedner and their Institute made major contributions to the understanding of children's diseases and the proper prophylaxis and nursing methods to deal with them.</datacite:description>
