<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Since the 1990s, educational reforms in Japan have been progressing toward individualization and diversification. The purpose of this research is to empirically clarify the actual situation on the design of the curriculum and educational outcomes of private upper secondary schools. According to three goals of the questionnaire survey administrated to the private upper secondary school principals (390 respondents), following findings were obtained. This survey has three goals. The first goal is to examine the current status of taking courses. So, I selected five subjects, Japanese, geography and history, civics, mathematics, science, and foreign languages, and clarified the characteristics of diversity seen in course taking regarding combinations of subjects in each subject. In addition, I examined issues that should be improved in the curriculum formation of each upper secondary school. The second goal is to explore the characteristics of private upper secondary school students as seen by the principal. How does each high school perceive that its high school students are attracted to high school education? Looking at the results of the survey, it was found that there was a difference between the highranking schools and the low-ranking schools, using the rate of advancement to higher education as an index. In addition, the data revealed that there were differences in the degree of achievement of the educational policies of each school in relation to the rate of advancement to higher education. Thirdly, Borman,K.M., and others examined the outcomes of high school education in the United State and found five indicators to measure the outcomes. Based on their five indicators of Academic Achievement, Career Development, College Preparation, Digital Literacy, and Dropouts, I clarified the educational outcomes of the private upper secondary schools. Looking at the results of the survey, it was found that characteristic differences were observed in each of the five outcomes between the high-ranking schools and the low-ranking schools, using the rate of advancement to higher education as an index.</datacite:description>
