However, the educational concepts of a kindergarten and an elementary school differ, and a common problem is that first graders in elementary school are not well adapted to school life. In response to “the first-grade problem in elementary schools,” schools have taken measures to establish cooperation. However, some first graders are still not well adapted to the school environment. To address this problem, this study investigated the difficulties facing first graders as they adapt to elementary school for the first time. Moreover, the difficulty of demanding independence from first graders was investigated. The investigation showed that first grade is difficult for students because elementary school follows a different educational plan than kindergarten or nursery school and students have not received training at home. Furthermore, since kindergartens, nursery schools, and elementary schools do not share a plan for teaching students to be independent, the actual conditions of education prior to elementary school do not adequately prepare first graders for being independent in elementary school. Future work should address the topic of creating a shared educational plan for encouraging children’s independence by elementary school.
