Method: We studied six male athletes and seven non-athletes male students aged 20-22 years. All subjects were free of cardiovascular disease, autonomic neuropathy, renal disease and received no drug therapy. Twenty four hour ambulatory electrocardiograms were obtained in all subjects using a digital recorder. These data were analyzed for heart rate variability by an analyzer system. The analysis of heart rate variability offers a method for studying the relationship between the high frequency component (HF) vs the ratio of low frequency component/high frequency component (LF/HF) of the parasympathetic nervous system in humans. Abdominal respiration was recorded six times per minute over 5 minutes. Result: We have adopted a new method about the changing score of the HF and LF/HF. 1) Athletes versus non-athletes: Using the HF and LF/HF changing score, our data clarified the 1.17±1.47 score in athletes and 2.28±1.11 in non-athletes students of elevation in cardiac parasympathetic tone 15 minutes after abdominal respiration under horizontal resting conditions. Statistically there was no significant difference between the athletes and the non-athletes. 2) Athletes versus non-athletes: Using the HF and LF/HF changing score, our data clarified the 3.00 ±1.55 score in athletes and 2.00 ±1.29 in non-athletes of elevation in cardiac parasympathetic tone 30 minutes after abdominal respiration under horizontal resting conditions. Statistically there was no significant difference between the athletes and the non-athletes. 3) In athletes the cardiac parasympathetic tone at 15 minutes was a 1.17 ± 1.47 score and at 30 minutes was a 3.00 ±1.55 score after abdominal respiration. Statistically there was no significant difference between the data at 15 minutes and at 30 minutes. 4) In non-athletes the cardiac parasjmipathetic tone at 15 minutes was a 2.28±1.11 score and at 30 minutes was a 2.00 ±1.29 score after abdominal respiration. Statistically there was no significant difference between the data at 15 minutes and at 30 minutes. 5) We found the peak value of LF/HF during and after the period by abdominal respiration in horizontal resting conditions: our data clarified the effect of abdominal respiration upon the autonomic nervous system. Six times per minute of abdominal respiration was calculated at 0.10 Hz as a frequency. Discussion: There are no reports on the evaluation of abdominal respiration on heart rate variability obtained from twenty-four-hour ambulatory electrocardiograms for athletes. The phenomenon of the peak value of LF/HF during and after the period by abdominal respiration was a very interesting one. The phenomenon seems to be a function of the low frequency 0.10Hz that performs the very important role for heart rate variability through the parasympathetic system.
