In the first section I present data which indicates that Japan is neglected by mainstream anthropology in the English-speaking domain. I suggest that one reason for this may be that in recent years Japan has increasingly been studied not in departments of anthropology or sociology, but in departments of 'Japanese Studies’, 'Oriental Studies' or 'Asian Studies’. This tendency has much to do with financial considerations: the high cost of living in Japan has made it difficult to conduct fieldwork unless it is financed by Japanese money. This money tends to be distributed through departments or programs which grant Japan special status, separate from disciplinary frameworks. I criticize the area studies approach, arguing that it encourages a persistence, albeit under different labeling, of Nihonjinron, the discredited essentialist school of thought which views Japan as 'uniquely unique’. In the second section I propose a theme-driven, rather than area-based, approach to anthropology in Japan. As an intellectual experiment, I attempt to apply the ideas contained in a famous work of traditional, generalized British social anthropology to the Japanese case. The work selected is 'Animal Categories and Verbal Abuse’ by Sir Edmund Leach. This essay of Leach's deals with prohibitions on the eating of various kinds of animal and on possible connections between those prohibitions and verbal insults which refer to animals. I attempt to show how applying Leach's ideas to the Japanese situation can generate a different kind of anthropology to that which starts from the proposition that the Japanese are unique people who require explanation.","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_description_15":{"attribute_name":"表示順","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"11","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_description_16":{"attribute_name":"アクセション番号","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"KJ00009364359","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_description_8":{"attribute_name":"記事種別(日)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"論文","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_description_9":{"attribute_name":"記事種別(英)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"Article","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_source_id_1":{"attribute_name":"雑誌書誌ID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA11291239","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_3_text_6":{"attribute_name":"著者所属(日)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"京都文教大学人間学部"}]},"item_3_text_7":{"attribute_name":"著者所属(英)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_language":"en","subitem_text_value":"KYOTO BUNKYO UNIVERSITY Department of Human Studies"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"metadata only access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cb"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"トム, ギル"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"4332","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Tom, Gill","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"4333","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2024-04-09"}],"filename":"hs01_20_tom gill.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"830 KB"}],"format":"application/pdf","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"url":"https://kbu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/1719/files/hs01_20_tom gill.pdf"},"version_id":"cbd781a1-177a-463d-9838-df4d294e3811"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"英国系人類学からみた日本-リーチの「動物カテゴリー」を例として","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"英国系人類学からみた日本-リーチの「動物カテゴリー」を例として","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"Japan as seen from social anthropology of the British school : Leach's 'Animal Categories' as an example","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"3","owner":"11","path":["41"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2017-03-23"},"publish_date":"2017-03-23","publish_status":"0","recid":"1719","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["英国系人類学からみた日本-リーチの「動物カテゴリー」を例として"],"weko_creator_id":"11","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2024-04-09T06:14:11.521782+00:00"}
