For the discussion, I have chosen the couch, considered as Freud’s psychoanalysis symbol. For the confession, I have chosen “The Confession” of Molteni (1838) and compared it with Freud’s psychoanalytical method.  \nI have clarified the difference between confession to seek pardon and salvation in the relationship with God and Freud’s method of aiming at psychological resolution by searching for “unconsciousness.” \nAt present, many human service professionals address aspects of mental health. In order to discuss how their approach differs from that of Freud, I have chosen a picture of “a nurse involved with a patient” and compared it with the illustration of Freud’s couch. \nA nurse is devotedly and sincerely facing a patient and making eye contact with the patient. By contrast, Freud considers the meaning of the act of human services while including unconsciousness.  It is clarified that Freud’s unique eyes, attitude, and expression are different from those of the nurse. I discuss that the difference between the nurse and Freud is whether they adopt the assumption of an “unconsciousness” or not.\nWith a few exceptions, Freud’s psychoanalysis has hardly been dealt with in scientific history. In Japan, only Hayao Kawai was interested in the relationship between science and depth psychology and has written some articles on the relationship between them. I have discussed the difference between my approach and Kawai’s approach.
