Cancer diagnosis places death in the patient’s life, not as an idea, but as a physical (physicality) experience. In this context, patients cope with the threat of death from cancer by avoiding cancer related information and actions, while preparing to undergo surgery (as a means of avoiding death). In the solitude and anxiety of facing death, relationships play an important function in supporting the patient before and after the surgery. In addition, the prospect of death may cause the patient to look back on his or her life, reexamine his or her way of life and values, and change his or her outlook on life. The patient may have concerns about life after discharge from the hospital, such as changes in body image and roles in society and the family, and may face the issue of how to live with a life that is inseparable from cancer. Based on the previous findings, the following suggestions were made regarding psychological support for cancer patients before and after surgery. In treatment decision-making situations, psychologists are required to organize information together and listen carefully to the patient’s thoughts and feelings surrounding cancer diagnosis, while assessing how the patient accepts the information. The psychologist may need to serve as an intermediary between the patient and the attending physician or other health care providers. It is important for psychologists to assess the patient’s psychological state at an early stage, share the assessment with other medical professionals, and create a support system involving other medical professionals. In this context, the quality, quantity, timing, and delivery of information should be carefully considered with other medical professionals, based on the patient’s psychological state. During hospitalization, the content of support with a view to post-discharge should be discussed with the patient and his/her family, leading to ongoing psychological support after discharge.
