She was officially conferred titles, including Tian-fei”天妃”,Heavenly Queen in the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties and Tian-hou“天后”, Heavenly Empress in Qing Dynasty.\nThe belief in Mazu was introduced to Ryukyu by the Fujianis during the Ming. The Mazu ritual in early modern Ryukyu formed part of the tribute system and was part of the political system of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This paper focuses on kami-tenpi temple ”上天妃宮” that functioned as the center of Mazu worship in early modern Ryukyu. Two important rituals were performed in the Tenpi-temple. The first was a ritual concerning the Shinko-sen”進貢船”, a ship of envoys from Ryukyu to China, and the second was a ritual concerning the Sakuho-sen”冊封船”, a ship of envoys from China to Ryukyu.\nIn the former ritual, the main statue of Mazu in the Tenpi-temple was transferred to Shinko-sen. The ritual had two purposes. One was to ensure the success of a voyage of great importance to the Ryukyu Kingdom, and the other was to show who could make that voyage. The processes of the ritual were designed to unite the crew for the purpose of making the voyage a success. Their participation in the ritual and work made them members of the community. The goddess functioned as a symbol of the ritual.\nIn this light, it is clear that Mazu worship in the Ryukyus in the early modern period was almost exclusively limited to the Kume-mura“久米村” and some boatmen“船方” participated in this ritual.\nThe latter ritual involved the transfer of the statue of Mazu from the Sakuho-sen to the Tenpi-temple. It is thought that the practice was initiated by Fujian crews during the mid to late 16th century under the influence of the suspension of the Ming's sea ban policy. They were full of energy and eager to expand overseas. Mazu was reborn as a goddess to reflect this ethos.\nBy referring to the above two points, the significance of the establishment and practice of the Mazu ritual in early modern Ryukyu can be summarized as follows.\nIt can be argued that Chinese sea merchants participated in the official trade with Ryukyu, which prompted the ritual transfer of Mazu to the Tenpi-temple, and was the starting point for the new Shinko-sen ritual. \nThe revival of the tribute trade in the Ryukyus was accompanied by a new formation of Kume-mura as a government organization, whose role would grow and become more organized. The ritual of boarding a ship with a statue of Mazu played a symbolic role in the formation and organization of the Kume‐mura.\n In conclusion, the relationship of tribute is embedded in the two rituals of the Tenpi-temple.
