| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to consider the creativity of Henry Darger. Darger is known as an Art Brut artist. The French term Art Brut (meaning “Raw Art” often referred to as “Outsider Art”) was invented by French artist Jean Dubuffet in 1945 to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture and society. What Dubuffet valued in these art works were the raw expression of artist’s inner world, free from any cultural or social constraint. Art Brut emphasized that artist should create their art for themselves rather than for others. Henry Darger (1892-1973) remains, one of the most prominent artists in the history of Art Brut. He was a solitary man who lost his parents at an early age and spent his youth in a Catholic home and in an asylum. In the privacy of his small rented room, he created 15,145 pages of text and hundred illustrations entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. No one knew that Darger created an imaginary world in secrecy. His artwork was discovered around the time of his death. As Toyoda(1998) has pointed out, creativity does not only have its positive side but also a negative side such as self-destructiveness and aggression which could lead to death. In Darger’s case, he was able to use his immense energy creatively and not destructively. In life, Darger was a pious Christian and almost every day he attended Mass and prayed devoutly. Despite his deep belief in God, in his writings and paintings, he occasionally showed his despair and anger towards God’s silence. He experienced ambivalence toward God. We consider that such ambivalence led Darger to his extraordinary creative work. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
