内容記述 This paper examines the two main Jewish heroes of Iris Murdoch. In The Message to the Planet (1989), Marcus Vallar is a Jew, and in A Fairly Honourable Defeat (1970), Julius King is a survivor from a Nazi concentration camp. The former novel shows what an important role the master-disciple relationship plays in its plot. Marcus Vallar is an ex-professional in the field of mathematics but is secluded from society at present, while Alfred Ludens admires the exmathematician as his master. Ludens, not seriously a Jewish-religion believer, supports Marcus because he thinks his master is still a researcher in the field of philosophy or someone like the Savior. The latter portrays how easily evil wins over good through the relationship of Julius King and his college friend, Rupert Foster. Rupert doesnʼt consider himself as arrogant. In both novels, Murdoch tells us about how crucial the message or messages from her Jewish heroes are. The very beginning of Marcus Vallarʼs story shows us an Irish poet called Patrick Fenman who is seriously ill. The master, being tracked down by his disciple, raises the dying poet under the spell he is said to cast. Julius succeeds in leading Rupert to decisive defeat, condemning that old classmate as a man of “hubris”. The Jewish hermit, Marcus Valler, is discovered dead in his room with his head towards the oven. The way he commits suicide reminds us of the Holocaust. He has a disciple who could record his life history, while his death is something like that of a Naziʼs massacre. He is also a supernatural performer. What Marcus simply leaves is something recorded. The master says something in it, but it is not so easy to understand, although it seems to be some language somewhere in this world. It needs to be decoded by a language specialist. Another unique character in A Fairly Honourable Defeat is Tallis Browne. He is remarkably tolerant. He doesnʼt make any complaints however selfish his wife is. That is why critics mention how Christlike these two figures are. Julius King succeeds in every project he launches. However, his story fails in showing what, to put it precisely, makes him lead his target, Rupert Foster, to his death. Another Jewish character, Marcus Vallar is ambiguous because what he leaves after he dies is impossible to understand. If there is something common among them, it is that it takes time to understand both messages clearly.
