内容記述 In all countries, the question of the soul has long been addressed to deepen the understanding of human beings. Tamashii, the Japanese word generally translated as “soul,” “psyche,” or “spirit,” is no exception. It has been a subject of study in various areas, including historical science, religious studies, literature, and folklore. In the field of clinical psychology, however, there has been little academic research done on tamashii; if any, it tended to describe tamashii as the proximity concept of the soul or the Self. Yet, can the concept or image of tamashii be described within the framework of the imported concepts such as the soul and the Self? Based on the assumption that tamashii would be an independent concept, this paper aimed, not to review the doctrine-oriented notions, but to draw the shared image of tamashii by gathering information from the Japanese folklore in order to approach what is consciously or unconsciously meant or expressed by the use of the word tamashii. It was found that tamashii was the psychic force, believed to be round-shaped, free-floating and detachable. Also, the superhuman talent or power one performed was seen as the action of tamashii, which resided temporarily in that person. These findings suggested that viewing the superior power as foreign would have created the intrapersonal mental space, the feeling of letting-go, and the mentality that one tended to consider his or her talent as the temporal gift. Through the process of gathering data, there were some overlaps seen in the concept of tamashii with tama (a gem symbolizing tamashii), kami (deity), and oni (ogre). These findings were discussed that the overlaps did not mean the ambiguity of each concept, but rather implied a possible framework that the Japanese used when confronting and coping with the unknown, the uncontrollable, anxieties, and the unconscious itself.
