| 内容記述 | インド・ベンガル地方における近代的印刷技術はキリスト教ミッションによって始められた。19世紀前半にその重要な役割を担っていたのがイギリス・バプティスト系のシラムプル・ミッションである。このミッションは自らのプレスをもち、聖書の現地語の翻訳本、ベンガル語や英語の新聞・雑誌・教科書を多数刊行した。こうした新しい活字メディアを通じて伝わった西欧の知識や情報は、近代教育を受け植民地政府の行政官となった人々などを中心に形成された新知識人層に大きな影響を与えた。そして主にこれらの人々によって進歩的宗教・社会改革運動が展開されていったのである。一方、活字メディアはベンガルの保守派にも影響を与え、19世紀以降ヒンドゥー復古主義者たちも自らの活動のために出版物をうまく活用しており、進歩主義者との間にベンガル社会の改革をめぐる論争を繰り広げた。こうして活字メディアは19世紀のベンガル社会に新たな形での論争文化をもたらしたのである。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Western printing technology was introduced to Bengal, India, by Christian missions in the late 18^<th> century. The Serampore Mission of British Baptism played an important role in the publishing world throughout the first half of the 19^<th> century. It had its own printing house, which published translations of the Bible into various local languages as well as producing many Bengali and English newspapers, magazines, and textbooks. Western knowledge and information spread through this print media, which influenced new communities of knowledge that began to form among the Bengali people receiving modern education and working mainly as British India government officials. Many of them then associated themselves with progressive religious and social reform movements. On the other hand, Hindu Revivalists were also influenced by the print media and made good use of publications for their activities from the 19^<th> century onward, developing the debate about reform of Bengal society with the progressive reformers. In this way, the new media brought a new form of debate culture into 19^<th> century Bengal society. | |||||||||||
