| 内容記述 | ジョージ・オーウェルは「伝記」には否定的であった。その遺言の中で、彼は「伝記」の執筆を禁じたという。一方で彼は、個人の人生を描く伝記の記述には対象となる作家の家系の説明が不可欠だと考える。この小論は、こうした相矛盾するオーウェルに注目する。植民地ビルマで帝国主義的な支配を目の当たりしたことで、彼の作家活動は始まる。警察官として5年の勤務をへたのちDown and Out in Paris and London（1933）というルポルタージュ作品を発表し、彼はエリック・ブレアからジョージ・オーウェルになる。現在までに、無視できない存在の彼についてはすでに数多くの「伝記」が出版されている。没後30年をへて、決定版と呼ばれる「伝記」が出版される。そして2003年に、ボーカ―とテイラーという二人によってそれぞれの「伝記」が出版される。この小論では、主として論述の対象をこの二つの「伝記」とする。生誕100周年という年にＫＧＢとの関係を示す新たな資料を読み込んだり、一方で作家という視点からかなりの思い入れを込めていたりと、これらは新たな視点から描かれているからである。私は「伝記」を読み込むことが作品の理解に如何に貢献するのかという論点に立っている。そして対象とする作品は、パリとロンドンの下層労働者の生活を観察したDown and Out in Paris and Londonに限ることする。「伝記」を読むとは、作品理解の先取りをすることでもある。また、伝記作家は作品の下敷きになった忘備録の存在を明らかにしてくれる。さらには、作家の心の襞にある思いをも読者に知らせてくれる。こうした諸点を作家の作品に照らし合わせて見るとき、読者は人生の様々な場面での出来事が、作家を作り上げるための大きな要因になっていることを知るのである。 | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | George Orwell(1903-1950) opposes the portrayal of his life history. He leaves his will which prohibits biographers from writing about his life after his death. He also mentions how literary biographers should portray their subjects. He insists that biographers should focus on a writer’s family tree. It might be noted how intricate and inexplicable Orwell’s personality is. He serves as a police officer in British colonial Burma. All of a sudden his life as a professional writer is launched after he stays in Burma for five years. Down and Out in Paris and London (1933) is a landmark of his writer’s career. This work of reportage is published with the signature “George Orwell” instead of his real name, Eric Blair. A great many biographies on George Orwell exist at present. The first “authorized” biography is written by Bernard Crick in 1980. However, in 2003, the centennial year of the writer, two crucial biographies come to us. Gordon Bowker, a critic and biographer, produces his GEORGE ORWELL with his unique inspection of secret material between the writer and a spy organization, the KGB. D. J. Taylor, a novelist and researcher of manners and customs in 19th and 20th century Britain, delivers his ORWELL THE LIFE with a fascinating portrayal of the writer from the professional writer’s point of view. The goal of this paper is to focus on how beneficial a comprehensive reading of biographies is in understanding a writer and his works. To achieve this goal the two new books mentioned above of George Orwell’s life and his work of art, Down and Out in Paris and London are mainly utilized. The reportage is his observation of how lower-class workers in Europe are exploited in the years prior to World War II. A comprehensive reading of biographies brings us to a finding of how a writer’s life and works of art are correlated. Some show us how meticulously the writer takes notes and leaves memos. Others inform us of how deep the unconscious realm of the writer is. Through a careful study of the writer’s works and all biographical material available, it is possible to form a deeper view of the whole body of the author’s works and how they reflect the critical phases of his life. | |||||||||
