内容記述 Based on fieldwork from October of 2003 to July of 2004 in a Catholic village in Shaanxi Province, North China, this paper focuses on marriage. This paper has three purposes, first, to explore women and men’s marriage experiences, second, to examine the social change of marriage patterns, third, to discuss the role that religion plays in gender relations and gender identities. The Catholic villagers believe that God’s power works on their marriages. This way of thinking parallels Chinese traditional ideas of marriage as demonstrated in the title of this paper. A brief introduction of the village is followed by the first chapter that discusses the role of religion plays in choosing marriage partner. It turns out that even today it is important for the villagers to maintain their identity as Catholic through marriage. This is demonstrated in the fact that the natal family of the brides from Catholic family is twice than those from non-Catholics. In addition, it also can be seen from the restraints toward divorce brought by religion. The second chapter examines that although most of the marriages in the village are bonded by traditional views, there is apparently social change in the perspectives regarding marriage, and especially changes on villager’s attitude toward the restriction from religion. The increasing cases of “free love” and divorce demonstrate such change. The third chapter introduces marriage rituals, and explores that the religious dimension of the rituals not only produce the boundary of the community, but also exerting great influence on the mentality of the villagers. The fourth chapter focuses on the cases of divorce and separation, examines the psychological pressure and limitation on behavior brought by religion. The change from “arranged marriage” to “free love” tends to be regarded as the process of evolution, however, it has the possibility to simplify the reality and fall into a Western-centered view. The practice of marriage of the villagers is neither a continuum of old customs, nor the result of new revolution. In the Catholic village there exists a social space that traditional customs, social change and Catholic doctrines mix together to offer various choice and space for manipulating.
