内容記述 What is the meaning of "locality" in the context of "the tourism for local culture"? In this article I will focus on the local culture which people of a given locality discover or create, and nurture as their property. In the tourism sphere local culture is deeply related with a locality and represents it as a whole. But this locality is not given to the local people a priori. This locality is a discovered characteristic which the local people find out from among various local activities, resources and sights in their area, and nurture it, then sell it to tourists as their own property, and sometimes as their "traditional" one. But in the real tourist sights this kind of discussion that is an invention of tradition or culture, is not received by the local people, especially those who use their characteristic locality to attract tourists. In the academic sphere it is ordinarily admitted that all traditions and cultures are anytime and anywhere invented or created. Nevertheless, for the local activists the "invention of tradition" indicates that a local culture is not authentic. If tourists know the true fact, they argue, they will not come to see the sights anymore. However, this is not the case. Activists may have a mistaken concept of the tourist mentality. Most tourists come to seewell-known things, without concern for their authenticity. Then the local people have to create characteristic sights from their existing local resources to attract the tourist's gaze. In this article, I explain some famous Japanese sights; for example, Yufuin, Tono, Uchiko etc. In these venues the local people make use of local resources and create attractive tourist sights and attractions from historic places, activities, and local products. I think such ventures that include the activities of local people can be termed authentic "local culture". Today we have to think about what happens in the actual tourist attractions. Apart from the academic discussion, local activists will express concern about the authenticity of their culture. But we can advice that they have only to think about their own activity to create a new attractive local culture that authentically represents the locality of their area.
