| 内容記述 | This is an annotated Japanese translation of the Mendhakavadana, the 9th and 10th chapters of the Divyavadana {Divy.), a collection of narrative literature. It is normal in the Divy. that a present story of a leading character goes with a story of a for mer life of the character in the same chapter. In this narrative, however, the 9th chapter deals with the present story of Mendhaka, the leading character, while the 10th contains a story of his own former life. While I cannot at present explain why they came at some point to be treated as two independent stories, in any case here I would like to treat these two chapters as a unit. The first half explains that Mendhaka and each member of his family have supernatural powers, and the second half illustrates why they came to have such powers by means of a story of their former lives, based upon the principle of karma and its fruition. The narrative literature knows a number of stories, the main subject of which is donation by lay disciples. In the case of the Mendhakavadana, the emphasis seems to be put on the attitude with which one gives, rather than what one gives. This narrative explains that a householder and his family, afflicted by a long famine, give their last meals to a Pratyekabuddha, as a result of which they received their supernatural powers. | |||||||||
