| 内容記述 | Japan: an Attempt at Interpretation' is perhaps the most popular work of Lafcadio Hearn in occidental readers. However, in Japan, this work has been far from popular nowadays, mainly because of the fact that its copyright was not given to his family immediately after his death, and Japanese translation after 2nd World War was published omitting his 'Appendix' at its end. Accessibility to the information contained in this part has thus been very limited for lay Japanese readers until recently. The Appendix is translated into Japanese in this present manuscript. Hearn had detected influence of Herbert Spencer on the foreign policy of the Meiji Government. It revealed Hearn's projective identification with Spencer including the latter's racism, which invoked conflict within Hearn and later tormented his children psychologically. | |||||||||
