内容記述 | This essay seeks to describe the background of the KBU English program that started in 1996 and the process of coping with the reality after KBU started. The curriculum of English that had been submitted to the Ministry of Education in Japan 2 years before the inauguration of KBU stressed the importance of communication in English rather than knowledge of English, which used to be a tradition of English teaching at least during the initial 2 years for the students in Japanese universities In order to clarify the feature and significance of the KBU English program, literature review shows the historical background of English teaching in Japan since the Meiji era and also current trend of several universities' attempts to innovate English curriculum. In view of Japanese historical background of English teaching, distinctive features of KBU English program can be summarized in the following 3 points: 1) Clear and unambiguous objectives, namely a quantitative target for each year, for the 1st year students sustained 5 minutes communication in English with a university instructor, likewise for the 2nd year 10 minutes, and finally for the 3rd year 15 minutes. 2) objective evaluation, that is, students are evaluated as regards their communication skill by an instructor who is not in charge of their class. 3) self-learning system; students are expected to work on computer-assisted learning as regards reading, writing and listening. After4 years, 1) and 2) have been satisfactorily achieved. As regards 3), however, lack of apt computer technician has procrastinated the development of the program. Since advanced authoring program software has been available and the computer rooms are ready, what KBU needs to fulfill the promise regarding its English curriculum is the right person who can set up and maintain the computer-assisted program. General assessment of the KBU English program, though leaving much room for improvement, is good enough to deserve attention by other universities in Japan which have reportedly been struggling to find new ways to motivate students to learning English for the age of globalization. | |||||||||||
