内容記述 | In recent years, the Ministry of Education has approved and required school counselors to be placed in schools throughout Japan. Although school counselors have become a part of the faculty of schools, their role has yet to be clearly defined. Throughout my work and study regarding school counselors in Japan, I have come to realize that the work of the school counselor is affected greatly by Japanese culture itself. In this paper, I examine the generally established concept of "uchi" and "soto" within the Japanese cultural context, and then I apply this concept to the role of the school counselor as set by the requirements and guidelines of the committee for School Counselors in Japan. From there, I discuss the activities of school counseling and how it should be conducted in the school from the considerations of the Japanese cultural context. Through an analysis of "confidentiality" within the concepts of "uchi" and "soto", the importance of maintaining and protecting the confidentiality of others becomes quite apparent in the educational setting within the context of "uchi". At times confusion arises over the introduction of a school counselor among the staff and faculty members of a school. Examples of such confusion, distrust, and problems that arise among the faculty, parents and guardians, children and students when considerations of "uchi" and "soto" become confused, are presented. By considering the importance of "uchi" from a Japanese cultural context, the role and place of the school counselor can be defined and the independent activities that are crucial for school counseling can be conducted. | |||||||||
