内容記述 | Kawaguchi Ekai (1866-1945) was a Japanese monk who spent several years in Tibet (1900- 02, 1914-15), and is described by a prominent modern Tibetologist, Sato Hisashi, as one of the founders of Tibetan studies in Japan. This paper reviews evaluations of Kawaguchi' s work by non -Japanese scholars and sketches the network of personal connections between Kawaguchi and other Japanese who ventured into Tibet and Nepal during the early 20th century. The first person outside Japan to take note of Kawaguchi’s work was F. Younghusband, in his book India and Tibet (1910). Kawaguchi’s own work, Three Years in Tibet (1909), was reviewed in the Geographical Journal (1910) in the year after its publication. More recently (1972), oriental historian P. Hyer has refuted the canard that Kawaguchi was a spy, discribing him as“a dedicated Buddhist", and as“nationalistic rather than chauvinistic". Kawaguchi is also referred to by the editors of two separate works, Autobiography (1969) and Tibetan Studies (1984) by the Indian Tibetologist S. C. Das. An Introduction to the Grammar of the Tibetan Language (1915) by S. C. Das carries Kawaguchi’s Tibetan-language poem,‘An account of the Pilgrimage of Ekai Kawaguchi to the Great Sanctuaries of Tibet’. C. Wessels refers to Kawaguchi’s work 13 times in the notes of An Account of Tibet (1931) by I. Desideri . As for Kawaguchi’s personal connections with other travellers and Indologists of his age, he is known to have had a new year lunch in Lhasa with three other Japanese, Tada Tokan, Aoki Bunkyo and Yajima Yasujiro, during his second visit to Tibet. Tada Tokan was suspicious of Kawaguchi, however, especially regarding his audience with the Dalai Lama. Kawaguchi was asked for any news about the monk-explorer, Nomi Yutaka, who had entered Tibet and whose whereabouts were unknown from his wife. Kawaguchi also served as guide to his teacher, Inoue Enryo, when the latter visited India. Inoue subsequently wrote of Kawaguchi’s Tibetan sojourn in a magazine article published before his return. Suzuki Daisetsu, a Buddhist scholar who was from the same temple as Kawaguchi, wrote in the foreword of Kawaguchi’s biography ,“I respect you as a pioneer.”Kawaguchi corresponded with another of his teachers, Nanjo Bunyu, from India, and was Takakusu Junjiro' s guide when he visited Buddha' s birthplace and Kathmandu. In these various ways, Kawaguchi was a key figure in the early development of Indology in Japan. Kawaguchi was a controversial figure, who did not hesitate to criticize works such as Omura Seigai’s A History of the Development of Tantric Buddhism (1918) and Teramoto Enga' s A Grammar of the Tibetan Language (1922). Otani Kozui described Kawaguchi as “untrustworthy”in a letter to S. Hedin, and Kawaguchi’s disciple, Yamada Mumon, recalls him as“a severe teacher". In twelve biographical reference books published between 1900 and 1957, Kawaguchi appears only once. From the 1960s onward, however, he has generally been included. |
