内容記述 | The population of the aged in America is increasing in recent years like other developed countries. The first purpose of this paper is to study how Christian denominations and organizations have been treating the aged for the past twenty years. The author examines papers discussing the relationship between the aged and religions and finds out that they are small in number. However, it does not mean Christian organizations do not have good programs for them considering their welfare. In 90's new groups and organizations cooperating different denominations and non-religious institutions have provided interesting programs. Institute of Spirituality and Aging is a good example. The second purpose of this paper is to study how Christians have presented ideas on death. One of the serious problems which most of the aged is "death". After 1970's the Am ' ^ it ' term such as Thanatology, hospice, informed consent, and quality of life are getting popular. Most of denominations and clergies realize the death education is important, and they are giving spiritual guidance on death at churches and in communities. Naturally there are lots of good materials prepared by headquarters of denominations and religious publishers. However, concerning scholarly researches discussing relationship between the death and religions, it's almost impossible to get papers in journals in America. In 1988 the idea of "quality of death" was presented by Kenneth Wallston and his associates. They used such term instead of "quality of life". Their ideas elicited much criticism, and scholars, physicians, nurses, and clergies rejected using such terms. They feel the word "death" is unsuitable to know the state of mind of patients. The author checks CD-ROM to find out whether "quality of death" is acceptable or not, especially by clergies and religious groups. As the author expected, they are not interested in such words. In recent years new movements treating patients in the terminal stage are recognized. Hospice Chaplain Network started in California is a good example. | |||||||||
