| 内容記述 | In South Korea, international marriages, particularly Korean-East and Southeast Asian marriages, have rapidly increased since 2000. The purpose of this paper is to point out the significant conflicts between foreign women married to Korean men and their mothers-in-law and to propose a meaningful suggestion for mutual understanding among them. The Korean EBS TV program entitled “Day-to-day Life of a Korean mother and her foreign daughter-in-law in a multicultural environment” with an intention to understand such multicultural family situations, is quite useful and meaningful. We can find three major factors of conflicts in each multicultural family between a Korean mother and her daughter-in-law in the above television program. Firstly, the basic lack of gender equality or gender roles should be mentioned. In contemporary South Korea, gender roles are still rigid. Most of the mothers-in-law who emphasize the role and responsibility of daughters-in-law in a household do not like their sons to do domestic chores. Secondly, the generation gap and cultural differences must not be forgotten. Most of the foreign daughters-in-law who have been forced to accept Korean culture and traditional relations with their mothers-in-law, say that those cultural and societal difference have been a big source of stress. Thirdly, the lack of collaboration and communication between foreign wives and their Korean family members are also very serious and stressful. These eventually lead to a feud between a foreign wife and other members of the family. In order to solve these problems, it is important for Korean husbands and mothers to understand the cultural background of their foreign wives. For this purpose it would be quite effective to provide Korean mothers with opportunities to visit the countries of their daughters-in-law. Financial support to be offered for multicultural families is also essential. |
