内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 GeGeGe no Kitaro by Shigeru Mizuki is a series of yokai manga/animation that is known worldwide as a synonym for Japanese culture, and represents the historical changes and turning points in the image of the otherworld and Yokai. In this study, we focus on two early works, “Graveyard Kitaro” (1960) and “Kitaro Yawa” (1960-61), from among the vast collection of GeGeGe no Kitaro works spanning more than half a century. In this study, the author interpreted those images internally from the perspective of depth-psychology, and considered its historical/psychological significance in modern times. Both early works of Kitaro are composites of ambiguous images and considered to incorporate polysemous images, such as dreams and myths, into the chronological format of a "story". Those images develop through repeated variations on several themes, such as the following: the points of contact and relationships between human and Yokai; this world and the other world; the visible world and the invisible world; the relationship between ego and non-ego. Yokai, or yokai-like humans/human-like yokai, are ambiguous beings that blend into two worlds. Eventually the ambiguous Yokai images become differentiated, and their rich, chaotic vitality diminishes. The image of Yokai changes in various ways over time and in relation to humans, but the structure and process of change that is common to other monster images like vampires can be recognized. Therefore, the depth psychology of Yokai images needs to be considered not only as a cultural/local discussion but also as a discussion of modern consciousness. In addition, images of Yokai are appropriate manifestations of the psyche, which is both ego-syntonic and ego-dystonic/ego-alien, namely known and unknown phenomena. The birth of Yokai like Kitaro, who symbolizes a new era, can be thought of as an image that questions the relationship between ego and non-ego in modern consciousness.
